The Devonshire Arms at Beeley
Living in a city, we always appreciate a stay in the countryside, and the prospect of a stay in the beautiful Peak District was something to look forward to, particularly when this was going to be the Devonshire Arms at Beeley, a marvellous 18th century inn, on the Chatsworth estate, and only a short drive, or, if feeling more active, an enjoyable walk, through picturesque countryside to the Chatsworth house itself.
We decided, after the drive to Beeley, that we would take the opportunity to do the above walk, in order to stretch our legs, and work up an appetite for our dinner later that evening. We enjoyed the views, and stopped to break at Chatsworth house, refuelling with a delicious cream tea. On our return to the Devonshire Arms, it began to get colder, and we took full advantage of the wood burning fire, sitting close to it, whilst indulging in a glass of red wine.
Our accommodation was a deluxe double room, Jasmine, situated in the delightful Dove Cottage, just across the road from the inn. A truly luxuriously decorated room, Jasmine was equipped with all the amenities to be expected, whilst skilfully designed to complement the building. A spacious bathroom, with walk in shower was much appreciated to ease our aching muscles following our walk, and complementary sweets and biscuits added to the fine attention to detail.
We were eagerly anticipating dinner, and, as to be expected, we weren’t disappointed. The aim is to use as many locally produced ingredients as possible, my Chatsworth eye of beef rib was simply delicious, and cooked to perfection. My partner enjoyed Saddle Back pork loin, equally good by all accounts. We struggled to choose deserts – I personally could have eaten each one, but I settled for the dark chocolate torte, and my partner enjoyed the cheese board, a great selection of locally produced cheeses.
We slept extremely well, the bed was supremely comfortable, with top quality bedding which enhanced our experience. The next morning we ate breakfast in the brasserie. As we imagined, there was a wide variety of cereals, fruit, cheese, pastries and yoghurts etc, I additionally had perfectly cooked poached eggs, and my partner enjoyed eggs benedict. All toosoon our stay at the Devonshire Arms was over. We took a slow journey home through the estate, stopping on the way to stock up on produce from the acclaimed Chatsworth farm shop. We arrived home feeling refreshed and replenished following our stay.
