The Black Swan, North Yorkshire
The hotel comprises three houses; the black and white house on the left of the terrace, the Georgian house in the middle, and the Elizabethan building on the right, which stands on the site where an inn is believed to have been situated for many centuries. This eclectic style of architecture enhances the character, style and unique ambience of the hotel.
Our room was well designed, with modern, well-appointed furnishings, giving a luxurious feel, with traditional overtones. A comfortable, queen sized bed afforded us an excellent and restful night’s sleep. Free Wi-Fi and a widescreen TV with satellite channels added to our enjoyment, Molton Brown toiletries completed the experience.
We anticipated that the dining experience at the Black Swan would be something special, and we weren’t disappointed. The Gallery restaurant doubles up as an art gallery, and eating becomes even more pleasurable when surrounded by stunning pieces of original art. We experienced the tasting menu on the first night. A seven course menu, complemented with matching wines allowed us to savour a wide selection from the menu, including some of the best lamb we have tasted, and an amazing chocolate desert.
Good food features strongly at the Black Swan. An excellent choice of breakfast menu the next morning was much appreciated. To work up an appetite for our afternoon tea that day we walked to Rieavaulx Abbey, a breath-taking walk, taking in part of the Cleveland Way, giving us a chance to experience the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside.
Back in Helmsley, on a stunning summer’s afternoon, we took afternoon tea in the delightful walled gardens. A magnificent selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones were a perfect culinary accompaniment to the perfect surroundings.
Following a walk to explore the wonderful town of Helmsley we enjoyed dinner again in the Gallery restaurant, the highlight of this meal being the extensive cheeseboard.
Retiring to our room, we were impressed by the consistently high housekeeping standards, all our needs were anticipated, contributing to our comfort and enjoyment. A final breakfast the next morning regretfully completed our stay at this marvellous hotel.
