Apples and orchards are synonymous with the Kent and Sussex countryside. Many of our places care for their own orchards and love to share their knowledge with visitors at special apple and orchard days. Have a go at apple pressing and identification, taste sweet treats or pick up an apple-based item to take home with you.

Whatever the weather, you’re sure to enjoy a great family day out with lots of apple activities to get stuck into.

Here are some top apple day and harvest festival events from Kent and East Sussex, where every visit helps the National Trust care for special places for seasons to come:

 

Scotney Castle, Kent

Hops and Honey Weekend

Sat 8 - Sun 9 September, 10am-4pm

Scotney is the only hop farm within the National Trust. They will also be hosting their hops and honey event on 9 & 10 September.

Guided hop walks

1 - 30 September, 11am and 2pm

These guided tours of the estate will show you where the hops are grown and give an insight into the workings of the hop farm. This includes the picking, drying and the packaging of hops ready to be sent to the local Westerham brewery.

Bateman’s, East Sussex

Apple Day

Sun 14 October, 11am-4pm

Explore the orchards at Bateman’s where you can sample and compare the many varieties of apples grown. Have a go at making apple juice with the homemade apple mill and press and there will also be a range of tasty orchard produce available; mulled cider, jams, honey, chutneys and, of course, apples to purchase. Meet the beekeepers and learn how the bees and the orchard work together to produce this rich autumn harvest. With family fun, games to play and orchard crafts, there is plenty to fill a whole day out.

Ightham Mote

Apple and Orchard Day

Sat 29 September 11am-4pm

Celebrate the bounty from the garden of England at our apple and orchard day. The orchard  at Ightham  Mote  is home to  a  variety  of  heritage  apple  trees,  which  you  can  sample  before  buying your favourite to take home.  With  such  a  variety,  there’s  sure  to  be  something  to  meet  everyone’s  taste.  Along  with  the  apples  from  the  orchard,  there  will  be  a  mini-market  featuring  a  number  of  stalls  with  themed  local  products, and of course plenty of apple-based dishes available in the tea-room.

Smallhythe Place, Kent

Orchard Day

Sat 15 September, 11am-4pm

Explore the garden, traditional orchard and nuttery at Smallhythe in the heart of Kent. Sample produce from the property, and peruse the local stallholders. From fresh produce straight from our trees, to plants, tasty treats and garden gifts, enjoy a day out with a difference with all the family.

Monks House, East Sussex

Apple Day

Sat 6 October, 12.30-5pm

Celebrate autumn and harvest time in the Monk's House orchard with apple pressing and apple themed games throughout the afternoon.
