UK Wife Carrying Race 2014

If you are looking for a weekend event to bring a big smile to your face, then add the UK Wife Carrying Race to your diary.  The event, in its 7th year is considered to be one of Britain’s top adventure races.  This year it is taking place on Sunday 16th March 2014, at 10.30am at The Nower in Dorking, Surrey, and is sure to be hilarious.

Before the race, the carrier needs to decide how to carry his partner.  A few popular styles are popular including the traditional piggyback, the wife hanging upside down on the carrier’s back, crosswise on the carrier’s shoulder, or just try any old way and hope for the best.

Although only 380m in duration, it is a testing race.  The course is uphill until half way through when there is a downhill descent.  As a spectator you are allowed to soak competitors with cold buckets of water, or use a water pistol to make the run even more of a test.  The hay bale hurdles add another dimension to the race and successfully jumping them is just about manageable with one’s wife on your back!

Wife Carrying Races are popular during the summer months in the Finnish town of Sonkajarvi, but we Brits prefer the challenge of colder conditions.  Last year’s race took place in the snow, not an easy feat for the 23 participating couples and hopefully the weather will be kinder this year.

You may (or may not) be pleased to hear that entries are now closed which means you can watch the proceedings, rather than participate ... do not worry, there is always next year’s race if you are interested, and who knows it might even do wonders for your relationship!
