The annual Maldon Mud Race, which began in 1973 when a local pub regular was challenged to serve a meal on the riverbank dressed in a tuxedo, is a fun race for charity in which participants compete to be the first to complete a 400- metre dash over the bed of the River Blackwater in the Essex coastal town, negotiating 200 metres of mud alongthe way.

The race can only take place when the tide is low enough for participants to run across safely, many of whom do so in fancy dress, raising money for their chosen charity.

The event is watched by thousands of spectators and takes place this year on April 29.
