Here are six of the best from the city to the coast and countryside, with a range of creature comforts.

  • Near the city

Five-star Nantes Camping is a spectacular suburban campsite of over eight hectares, just a few minutes' tram ride from the buzz of Nantes (flights from 11 UK airports) – proving you don't have to camp in the middle of nowhere. Hire bikes to use in town and book into the on-site restaurant for a gourmet dinner. Reflecting Nantes' status as one of Europe's greenest cities, the campsite is fully eco-friendly.

  • On the Atlantic coast

Le Moulin de l'Éclis in Assérac (Loire-Atlantique) is a stone's throw from beautiful Pont-Mahé Bay with its arc of golden sand. Two aquaparks with three water slides are complemented by wind- and kite-surfing from the beach, and kayaking on the marshy waterways of the Brière Natural Park. Mobile homes, chalets and regular pitches available, plus dishwashers and luxurious bathing facilities.

Les Places Dorées enjoys a prime forest spot 800 metres from the beach in one of the region's best-loved coastal resorts, Saint-Jean-de-Monts (Vendée). Choose from classic pitches, mobile homes and cottages with garden furniture. The fitness room and free wellness area with sauna, hammam and jacuzzis adds a touch of luxury to your camping break.

  • In the countryside

Le Lac des Varennes commands an idyllic setting beside a 50-hectare lake with a sandy beach in Marçon (Sarthe). The accommodation choice is vast, ranging from simple canvas bungalows to insulated chalets and safari-style 'Victoria' lodges with wooden terraces. It's a paradise for birdwatchers, while others can enjoy the archery and pedalos before retiring to the snack bar for evening entertainment.

  • In a historic village

Glamping Sainte-Suzanne (Mayenne) takes advantage of Sainte-Suzanne's status as one of France's most beautiful villages. Admire its golden stone architecture, soak up local history and heritage at the château and buy delicious local produce from the Saturday morning market. Each cosy glamping lodge comes with Wifi and a fully-equipped dining area – and as Sainte-Suzanne sits on a hilltop, the views are sublime.

  • On the banks of the Loire

L'Isle Verte at Monsoreau (Anjou) is ideal for cyclists, situated on the Loire à Vélo cycle route and an ideal riverside base for exploring Saumur with its château and famous Cadre Noir riding school. Though just 100 metres from shops, restaurants and a Sunday market, the campsite remains an oasis of peace with its heated outdoor pool and bivouac tents with space for bikes.
