Thousands of performers, from throughout the Cook Islands, convene on Rarotonga to showcase their local culture. The dance and costumes are vibrant, colourful and energetic reflecting the Polynesian and Cook Islands Maori heritage, which locals are hugely proud of.

The events celebrate the subtle differences between each island, with friendly rivalry over who has the best drummers, dancers and costumes. Traditional leaders determine the theme of each dance troupe's performance, which is linked to local history, heritage and lineage.

Months of preparation goes into every element of the festival, from the dances which are specifically choreographed for the event, to the costumes, each of which is one-of-a-kind and hand made from local materials including leaves, shells and feathers.

This National Event has grown over the years drawing international visitors from across the globe to Rarotonga. It is a fantastic time for visitors to experience Cook Islands arts and culture, the festival includes colourful float parades, singing, dancing and drumming.

This week the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation is launching a campaign to raise global awareness of Te Maeva Nui, with three videos that capture the essence of what Te Maeva Nui is about:
