A new free exhibition at Portsmouth City Museum, from 5th October 2013 until 23rd February 2014, will investigate the truth behind some of the popular myths about ancient Egypt. Based on the evidence of objects spanning 4,000 years, Secret Egypt - Unravelling truth from myth will bring together over 150 items drawn from Birmingham Museums' significant ancient Egyptian collection. Egypt has always fascinated people and is the inspiration behind many books, films and TV shows.  Such is its resonance in society that some of the most popular and commonly held beliefs on the subject are mere fabrications by the film industry used to sensationalise the story and excite the audience. Open Tuesday - Sunday (closed Mondays) 10am - 5pm, Secret Egypt is a Herbert Touring exhibition developed in partnership with Birmingham Museums Trust; for details call 023 9283 4779, www.portsmouthmuseums.co.uk.
