Complete with giants, beasts, animated tableaux and costumed characters, one of the oldest and most colourful parades in the country, which dates from 1498, is the City of Chester’s Midsummer Watch Parade. It takes place over the weekend of June 22nd and 23rd and starts at 2pm. It reflects 500 years of the city's history and relies heavily upon the continued support and involvement of local people to keep it alive. While Chester, with its Roman walls and medieval buildings, is a marvellous place to visit, for a real spectacle, this midsummer weekend is a great excuse to visit. www.midsummerwatch.co.uk
