You can make your Mum feel extra special this Mother’s Day by treating her to a traditional Mothering Sunday Tea at Bateman’s estate in Burwash, Sussex. This beautiful 17th Century Jacobean house, with its mullioned windows and oak beams, provided a much needed sanctuary to the world-famous writer, Rudyard Kipling. It is surrounded by the beautiful wooded landscape of the Sussex Weald.

The rooms, described by him as ‘untouched and unfaked’, remain much as he left them, with oriental rugs and artefacts reflecting his strong association with the East. You can also follow the footpaths on the Bateman’s estate to discover ‘Kipling Country’. The hills, fields and river were an escape and inspiration to Rudyard Kipling, whatever the weather.
