For those passionate about orchids then do not miss the Orchids Festival at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew this winter.  There is no doubt that the utterly amazing displays of vibrant colours and wonderful scents will banish those winter blues.

Naturally, the atmosphere in the Princess of Wales Conservatory will be very warm allowing the magnificent orchid specimens to thrive (and allowing you to escape the winter chill!).  You will feel like you are in a tropical rainforest, surrounded by steamy displays, including a cascade of stunning Vanda orchids and various tropical flowers.  There is even a wonderful new orchid to be shown at the festival and it is sure to be a delight.

Do take a wander through the plant-hunter’s camp in the pond area, where wardian cases and floating canoes can be found full of numerous plants awaiting transportation to far-away lands!

Interestingly, scientists will also be on call on Wednesdays and Sundays to help  visitors understand how certain species of plants have been brought back from near extinction using various techniques.

Check out the activities planned for children from 15th to 23rd February (free of charge).  Your child can take on the character of a plant explorer and is sure to find the awesome world of orchids as fascinating as you do.   There is an encampment which enables children to learn how Kew specialists carry out their plant-finding missions.

It is definitely worth booking on the guided tours available to learn more about the fascinating specimens within the Tropical Nursery. There is a tour providing a learning experience about carnivorous plants, bromeliads, orchids and cacti on 15th and 22nd February, also on 1st and 8th March.  You can gain an interesting insight into the Nursery’s conservation work around the world.

Another tour allows you to meet with orchid experts on 13th, 20th, 27th February or 6th March.  Afterwards there is a Q&A session, or potting tips will be provided and advice on how to care for orchids.
