A world-renowned spectacle whose flamboyance, vivacity and extravagance epitomises Brazil’s fun-loving culture, Rio Carnival is celebrated 40 days before Easter and, in 2017, will take place from Friday 24th – Tuesday 28th February.

This nine-day holiday takes in the five-day citywide party and includes tickets to the main event: the carnival parade at the purpose-built Sambódromo on Sunday 26th February. Over the weekend the enormous arena sees 12 of the very best samba schools parade past thousands of spectators in outrageously elaborate costumes alongside floats festooned with lavish adornments.

The party goes on into the night, spilling onto the streets with an infectious energy that takes over the city’s bars, boulevards and beaches. There is time to explore the city and visit its iconic sights with a guided Jeep tour of the Santa Teresa district and Christ the Redeemer statue at the top of Corcovado Mountain. The rest of the time is yours to enjoy the city independently, perhaps visiting Sugar Loaf Mountain, Ipanema beach or the botanical gardens.

When the party fizzles out on Ash Wednesday, you will head to the chic beach resort of Búzios for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Spend a few days enjoying the smart boutiques and restaurants, taking a boat tour of the islands or simply lazing on the sun-drenched, white-sand beaches.

This good-value holiday starts from £2,292 per person based on quality accommodation. The price includes transfers, tickets and transfers to the carnival parade, an excursion to the statue of Christ the Redeemer and breakfast. Flights are extra.
