The wow factor: Winner of more Blue Flags than any other UK resort – it has held the coveted International Blue Flag accolade for the past 22 years – Sandbanks is one of five beaches in Poole and comprises three miles of soft, golden sands on a peninsula ranking as Britain’s most expensive piece of real estate. Thankfully, you don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy its glorious sands.

Activities: Cycle along the beach promenade to Branksome Dene Chine and on to neighbouring Bournemouth. Swim and windsurf off the beach. Take the chain ferry to visit the National Trust’s Studland Beach and Nature Reserve. Sandbanks Beach hosts the British Beach Polo Championships each July.

Stay: The Sandbanks Hotel (www.fjbhotels.co.uk) is right on the beach and offers a terrace with direct beach access, indoor pool, gym, beauty rooms and a water sports academy.
